Smart Washing Machines, What’s Next?

by Cat Minor

NestI recently came across an article in a magazine regarding smart washing machines that connect to your home’s Nest. The Nest is a device that monitors your home activity through your broadband usage.  You can connect devices such as your thermostat, lights, and washing machine to the Nest through Wi-Fi, download the app and control the devices from your phone, tablet or laptop. In fact, some devices even learn from your previous programming so you don’t have to reprogram.

As more and more of our everyday devices, such as wash machines, become dependent on bandwidth, so will our customers.  It’s important to ask during the sales process about smart home devices, along with the number of laptops, tablets and smart phones, so you can accurately determine how much bandwidth the potential customer will consume, and thus ensure they have an excellent experience with your Internet service.  You may uncover additional upsell opportunities by asking this question, especially if you sell smartphones, other devices, and even security products. Even if you don’t, by having these conversations with customers, you build a better rapport and cement your company in their minds as being a technology leader.

We’ll soon be able to run our entire household from our smart phones.  Now, if only they made a washing machine that would transfer the laundry to the dryer, fold the clothes and put them away!  What smart home devices do you have in your home?  We would love to hear about them.
